A Modern German Short-Haired Pointer Fable

Once upon a time, in a vast and lush forest, lived a German Short Haired Pointer named Hans. Hans was a handsome dog, with sleek brown and white fur and an impressive pedigree. He was the envy of all the other dogs in the forest, but he was also very proud and arrogant.

Hans always strutted around with his head held high, looking down on the other animals as if they were beneath him. He would often boast about his pedigree, his hunting skills, and his intelligence, believing himself to be the greatest dog in the forest.

One day, while out for a walk, Hans came across a rabbit who was struggling to carry a basket of vegetables. "Ha! Look at you, struggling with that tiny basket!" Hans scoffed, "You should be grateful I'm here to help you, you know."

The rabbit thanked Hans, but as they walked, he couldn't help but feel annoyed by the dog's arrogance. "Why does he have to be so pompous?" the rabbit thought.

As they walked, they came across a fox who was lost and needed directions. Hans, eager to show off his intelligence, offered to guide the fox. "I know these woods like the back of my paw," Hans boasted. "I'll have you where you need to be in no time."

The fox followed Hans, but soon realized that the dog had no idea where he was going. They were wandering aimlessly, and the fox could sense that they were getting farther away from his destination.

Frustrated, the fox confronted Hans, "You said you knew these woods like the back of your paw, but we're lost! Why did you lead me astray?"

Hans didn't like being questioned, and he became defensive. "Well, maybe if you weren't so weak-minded, you would have been able to keep up and understand my directions," he snapped.

The fox was insulted and angry, but he knew that arguing with Hans was pointless. He decided to leave the dog and find his own way. As he walked away, he heard Hans muttering to himself, "Stupid fox, he couldn't even follow my directions. I don't need him anyway."

Days turned into weeks, and Hans became more and more isolated. The other animals in the forest grew tired of his arrogance and stopped inviting him to their gatherings. Even the birds stopped singing when he walked by.

One day, while wandering alone in the forest, Hans came across a pack of wolves. They were fierce and hungry, and they saw the German Short Haired Pointer as an easy target. Hans tried to intimidate them with his size and pedigree, but the wolves didn't care. They pounced on him, and soon Hans was fighting for his life.

As the wolves circled around him, Hans realized the error of his ways. He had been so proud and arrogant that he had alienated everyone around him. He wished he had been kinder and more humble, but it was too late now.

Just when it seemed like all hope was lost, a group of rabbits, foxes, and other animals appeared on the scene. They had heard the commotion and had come to investigate. Together, they were able to scare off the wolves and save Hans.

As he lay there, battered and bruised, Hans felt a newfound sense of humility. He realized that he had been wrong to think of himself as better than everyone else. He apologized to the animals who had come to his rescue, and from that day on, he made a vow to be kind and helpful to all the creatures in the forest.

The other animals were surprised by the change in Hans, but they welcomed him back into their fold. Hans learned that true strength doesn't come from arrogance and pride, but from humility and friendship.

German Shorthaired Pointers

German Shorthaired Pointers are smart, friendly, enthusiastic and willing. They make great companions with the caveat that they do need plenty of exercise to keep them from engaging in destructive behaviors when home alone.  They are a very athletic breed and can easily escape from enclosures up to six feet high...so beware!  These dogs are naturally vocal and make great watch dogs.  German Shorthaired Pointers shed constantly but need very little grooming with only occasional brushing required.
