Anatomy of a Stock Photo: Tiger By The Tail

To create this image of a businesswoman holding a tiger by the tail in a corporate lobby...an image that speaks to the challenges, risks, and unintended consequences of running a business, required a great deal of work and resources. Let's take a look at just what went into the creation of this image.

Over the years I have rented lions, tigers, elephants, cats, dogs, hamsters deer, reindeer, and many other others. To rent this tiger for a photo shoot today would be around $1,000.00. To shoot the tiger leaping would require some pre-training by the animal trainers. During the photo shoot, we would have paid assistants, studio time, and all the ancillary expenses that accompany a complicated, and dangerous shoot.

To rent the corporate lobby would require either location scouting or the services of a location scout and paying a fee for the rental of the property. Even a simple location is likely to set one back at least $500.00. There would be travel time and other expenses as well.

The model can be rented for a relatively modest $150.00. There would probably be some wardrobe expenses as well.

The digital manipulation took me approximately six hours to create the leaping tiger from various tiger shots from the shoot. Then another couple of hours to add in the model and the corporate lobby background.

So, to create this tiger by the tail image required at least $2000.00 in expenses and several days' worth of scouting, shooting, and Photoshop work. The image has now been uploaded to Getty Images and can be expected to earn anywhere from nothing to possibly as much as $100.00 over the next year.

So why create this image for stock? Good Question! I would venture a combination of habit and the creative satisfaction I get from making images. But, I should mention, that my production is dropping as the financial futility of creating such images becomes ever more apparent.
