A fishing boat is pulled up on the beach, an idyllic white sand beach, out of the tropical waters of the Arabian sea. The beach is on Socotra, an island off the coast of Yemen known as the Galapagos of the Indian ocean. The island has beautiful beaches, dramatic and rugged mountains and deep canyons. The island had dragon blood trees, Frankincense trees and bottle trees...and a lot of goats!
Dragon Blood and Bottle Trees
The Dragon Blood trees, referred to by locals as "dragons", are funnel shaped and are up to 5000 years old. The bottle trees are some of the oddest looking of all trees with fat trunks that taper to thin sparse tops with few leaves. Perched in the trees one can find the omnipresent and surprisingly tame Egyptian vultures. Rounding out the unique flora and fauna are the Frankincense and Cucumber trees.
Endemic Species
Over 700 unique and endemic species have been found on Socotra.
