Partisan Politics Humor Photo

Partisan politics are seen in the humorous stock photo of an elephant (representing the Republican Party) and a donkey (representing the Democratic Party) standing at the edge of an abyss, a cliff superimposed over an American Flag. The image depicts the unfortunate state of Democracy in America where partisan politics Trump bipartisan problem solutions.

Elephants, Donkeys And Political Parties

The use of the elephant to represent the Republican Party and the donkey to represent the Democratic Party is a long-standing tradition in American politics, dating back to the mid-1800s.

The use of the elephant as a symbol for the Republican Party is generally credited to political cartoonist Thomas Nast. In 1874, Nast drew a cartoon for Harper's Weekly that depicted an elephant labeled "The Republican Vote" standing triumphantly atop a defeated lion (representing Democratic voters). The image became popular and soon after, the Republican Party began using the elephant as their official symbol.

The use of the donkey to represent the Democratic Party is also credited to Thomas Nast. In 1828, presidential candidate Andrew Jackson was often referred to as a "jackass" by his opponents. In response, Jackson embraced the label and began using the image of a donkey on his campaign posters. Nast later picked up on this and used the image of the donkey in a number of his political cartoons, eventually solidifying it as a symbol for the Democratic Party.

Since then, the elephant and donkey have become iconic symbols of the two major political parties in the United States, representing their respective ideologies and values.
